with your guide, stopping en route
to visit the ruins of Leon Viejo then arriving
at one of the two must see colonial cities
in Nicaragua:
León.
The capital of Nicaragua until 1857, these days it is a quiet
provincial city . though it would be even quieter were it not
for the presence of the National University, the country’s
premier academic institution.

The original León was founded by Hernández de
Córdoba in 1524 at the foot of Volcán Mombotombo, where its ruins, now known as
León Viejo, still lie. The city was subsequently moved northwest to its
present-day location soon after León Viejo’s destruction by an earthquake and
volcanic eruption in 1609. Today, the city’s main attraction is its Cathedral,
the largest in Central America, while an array of other churches, eighteen in
all, displaying a fine spectrum of architectural styles and photographic
opportunities, seem to spring up on practically every corner. After an
interesting city tour, where we will visit the studios of well known artisans,
we will visit the boiling mud pools at nearby
La Jacinto.
Hotel Les Balcones
The Hotel Los Balcones de Leon is an
attractive property, with a traditional, colonial décor. The building is
architecturally interesting, and it has a pleasant courtyard. They have 20 rooms
decorated with a Spanish colonial touch, according with our city, with
