The maize production
during cycle
2005-2006 was of
12,3 million
quintals, with a
seeded area of
554.142 apples. This
represented yields
of 22,3 quintals by
apple according to
the Magfor.
In the cycle the
2001-2002 production
was of 10,88 million
quintals, with
yields of 20,7
quintals by apple,
in agreement with
numbers of the
Central bank of
Nicaragua (BCN).
In cycle 2004-2005,
according to the BCN,
the production of
maize it was of 11,2
million quintals,
with yields of 22,9
quintals by apple.
The seeded area
arrived at 492,3
thousand apples. The
production is
destined to the
internal
consumption.
A
group of American investors was interested in buying
Nicaraguan maize, opening new perspective for the production
of this grain, informed the general manager into Farming
Lafise, Enrique Zamora.
These perspective have been opened from the use of the maize
like raw material for the ethanol manufacture, a
biocombustible.
This demand of the maize to produce ethanol is elevating the
prices of the grain and their international demand.
Zamora said that this year they could impel a program of
support to small maize producers, with the purpose of
improving the volumes of production.
Alvaro Fiallos, president of the National Union of
Agriculturists and Ganaderos (UNAG), indicated that indeed
they are working in increasing the volumes of production,
but without increasing the area of sowing.
“We want to increase the yields of production”, assured
Fiallos.
The maize, like frijoles, been has concentrated
traditionally in small producers.
But frijol has been positioned, in recent years, like one of
main products of export of the country, when surpassing the
30 million generated dollars the year last, according to
preliminary numbers.
In
Mexico the rise of the maize, one of main grains of
consumption, has caused an increase in almost 100 of the
price of the kilo of tortilla, which generated a strong
malaise social that was translated in mobilizations in
several states of the country and reclamations from the
parties to the Government to restrain the increases.
But the Government signed
yesterday with producers and maize retailers an agreement to
stabilize the price of the kilo in a maximum of 8,5 pesos
(0,77 dollars).
In Nicaragua the prices of the
grain stay stable: 220 córdobas the quintal.
